Your cremation planning guide

Planning ahead for cremation involves two separate decisions: the arrangements you want and how those future expenses may be funded. This guide helps you keep those choices clear.

Write down the arrangements you want

A direct cremation and arrangements that include a gathering, viewing or memorial can involve different services and costs. Share your wishes with the people who may help carry them out.

Ask for local, itemized prices

Request current pricing from providers in the area where services would take place. Separate the cremation itself from transportation, permits, an urn, a memorial and other chosen services. National averages are not a quote for your family.

Understand what insurance provides

Cremation coverage is commonly discussed as life insurance intended to help with future final expenses. An eligible claim generally pays a death benefit to the designated beneficiary, subject to the policy and any valid assignments. It does not itself book a cremation or guarantee a provider’s price.

Keep prepaid arrangements separate

A prepaid funeral or cremation contract is an arrangement for specified services and funding. Insurance is a separate contract with an insurer. Ask who holds the money, what is guaranteed, what can change and what happens if the family moves or chooses another provider.

Check the resources already available

Review savings, existing life insurance and any prepaid arrangements before deciding whether additional coverage is useful. Compare an actual premium with the benefit amount and the expenses you want help covering.

Explain the plan to the beneficiary

Ask who should receive the benefit and how to make a claim. Keep policy and provider documents accessible to the right person. Ask about benefit timing: a new policy cannot cover a death that has already occurred and may contain early benefit limitations.
